The area called Steamboat is in the extreme southwest corner of Jackson County, about 6 miles up Steamboad/Carberry Creek from Applegate River. Gold miners began working the creek in 1860 but the rich load died out in 1869. The name Steamboat is a miners' term for a digging that has been worked out or not lived up to expectations. 

This post office was located on a bend of the East Fork of Evans Creek, Township 34S, Range 2W, one mile south of Thomas Mill and about three miles equidistant between Asbestos to the north and Beagle to the south. The first postmasters Joseph Satterfield and WM. Mayfield only lasted a few months. The post office's papers were sent temporarily six miles south to Sam's Valley as neither Asbestos nor Beagle had post offices at that time.

Although several places in Jackson County were known for soda springs, the only post office of that name was on Emigrant Creek about 11 miles southeast of Ashland (in the extreme northern part of township 40S, range 2E) on the Wagner's land at Wagner Springs. John Marshall Wagner held onto the postmaster's job until the post office closed.

The long lived little post office of Siskiyou was ten miles south of Ashland near the Siskiyou Pass by the SP railway station at the NE end of Siskiyou Tunnel. Alice Ager was the first postmaster. Siskiyou was named for the Siskiyou Mt. range. From 1920-1931 Colestin's mail was routed through Siskiyou but the Colestin PO was re-established in 1931, replacing Deter. As a railroad mail stop Siskiyou PO closed next, to be served by Ashland.

Shady Cove was the last post office to be established in the region. The community grew as a fishing/tourist stop on the way to Crater Lake. The post office is north of the bridge on the Crater Lake Highway two miles S of Trail. Shady Cove is the largest shopping center of the Upper Rogue.
