Bennett carefully retained the negatives that matched his numbered photographs, and stored them in notebooks. The negatives were returned to him cut into 4-image film strips (occasionally longer or shorter). He placed these strips in plastic sleeves and organized them using the same numbering sequence as he used for the prints, that is, Year#.Roll# (e.g. 91.14). The sleeve for each roll was accompanied by a sheet of notebook paper on which he wrote the serial number of the film, the nature of the camera and lenses used, and other technical information. He also wrote a number on each line corresponding to the print numbers on that roll. For some rolls, these numbers were accompanied by a written description of the image for that numbered print. For all too many cases, unfortunately, the space after the image number was left blank, and Bennett has left us with no written description. The descriptions that Bennett did provide can be seen in the Film-Strip Notebooks. They have also been included in the detailed Photo Print: Boxes (but not in the Summary).
As described in the listing of the numbered prints, a few sets of Bennett's prints from 2006 and later were found scattered in the collection. These prints had not been numbered by Bennett, and they had not been filed with the earlier prints. Fortunately, the film strips associated with these scattered prints were also located, and the dates made it possible to put the prints in sequence. These film strips also made it possible to produce duplicates for any prints that happened to be missing. These film strips are located at the end of Noteook 6. Finally, a few loose film strips were found (containing a total of 27 images) without any context. These are listed at the end as No Date (nd), and photocopies of those images are included in Photo Print Box 11.
