Machine Politics and the Sectional Crisis, 1849-1861

This volume focuses on the role of Joseph Lane in the  politics of the Oregon Territory from 1849 to 1861. It explores his "relationship with the machine, ..the motivations of his politicl behavior and ... seeks to examine the impact of the sectional controversy upon the people of Oregon."  He "was able to capitalize on his Western residence, his sincere devotion to Southern rights, and the national forum provided him by Congress."
