Emil Britt provided this history: In 1880 Jacksonville purchased a cistern Pump which cost about $2000. It arrived in Portland on the Queen of the Pacific, but required special attention when the ship went aground on the bar of the Columbia. Frpm there it was moved by rail and team to Jacksonville. It could throw a stream from its 2 inch hose to every building in town. It also was transported by rail to Medford when a large woodpile by the railroad caught fire and threatened to burn the village down.
