First School in Rogue River Valley

The first school was erected in 1854 on the banks of the Bear Creek river one-fourth of a mile NE of Talent.  It was 18 by 32 feet with a slab floor, and made of logs cut for the purpose.  There were two windows on each side with muslin covers.  Mary Hoffman was the first teacher.
