Emil Britt presented this history of the Cistern Pumper. Jacksonville purchased the pumper in 1880 when the town had 1800 people for about $2000. It was shipped from San Francisco but had trouble getting over the Columbia bar, but it finally made it to Glendale by rail, and then by team to Jacksonville. It drew water from cisterns and it's two inch hose could hit every building in town. It was even used to put out a huge wood fire in Medford.
