Prof, KS Crossman, U of O ethologist, visited the Jacksonville museum and offered to classify some of the town's old fossils that were found in rocks and sandstone north of town. He said that specimens were from the Vivian Beach quarry, from the Cretaceous period, the age of reptiles. The shallow Chico sea left deposits of shale, sandstone and little snails and clams.
