A southbound air mail plane, piloted by Pat Patterson, crashed into the face of a butte near the Mt. Ashland mine and fell 200 feet. Patterson was pinned down by the wreckage, but woodcutters in the area rushed to the plane, extricated Patterson, and hauled him on a sled to the highway. Heavy fog and low visibility caused the crash. The mail was saved.
