Four women, interior room, preparing hair, etc., Hargrove sisters. (glass plate negative)/ 1994.46.2.55
NOTES from family member:
Comparing it with many of my other Hargrove family (Ashland) photos that I have collected over the years, I can confidently identify the woman at lower right (adjusting sox) as my great-aunt Ida Hargrove (1864-1949), daughter of Reuben and Eleanor Hargrove. I am reasonably confident that the woman standing on left (holding mirror) is Ida’s niece Margaret Hargrove (1878-1906), a granddaughter of Reuben. Margaret came to Ashland from Kansas about 1896 and died unmarried in 1906 of tuberculosis.
It’s possible the woman sitting at left (combing hair) is Ida’s sister Anna Hargrove (1868-1941). And the woman seated at rear on right may be my great-grandmother Mary Hargrove (1879-1957), younger sister of Margaret, but the angle of her head makes it impossible to say for certain. I would say these last two are only “educated guesses.”
Contents of the bedroom are interesting as I study it greatly enlarged. I’m especially intrigued by the old group family photo on the wall (top), which probably is an 1880s-period portrait of Reuben and Eleanor with several of their children. Just wish it was clearer….better yet, I wish I could locate the original portrait (ha)! And the Bay Rum bottle on the dresser….did women of that era use Bay Rum cologne? (thought it was a male fragrance).
