Old Crater Lake Road. Narrow, rutted dirt road extends through forest of tall straight pine trees; back of horse's head in lower left corner. Written on back of photo: 'Old Crater Lake Rd. between Prospect and Union Creek'. Prospect Area (Or.) Correction: this is NOT between Prospect and Union Creek. What it shows is a segment of road that still exists but is now far wider. This is a tangent of a portion of the West Entrance Road between 5,000 and 6,000 feet in elevation. The trees are lodgepole pine, and a response to a large fire first noted by Joseph LeConte on his visit to Crater Lake in 1885. The date of this photo is somewhere around 1910, or before the Army Corps of Engineers Road System project that began in 1913. Motorists in the present era will recognize this tangent as the one where Union Peak first appears, then disappears as travelers go east on Highway 62 from Union Creek.
