Ellis taught art at Coronado High School (two years). With husband owned Ellis Neon Company in Los Angeles until blackout during World War II put them out of business. The couple moved to Medford Oregon and owned and operated Medford Neon Co. from 1943 to 1956. They were the area's major neon sign designers and manufacturers for many years and other local sign manufacturers got their start by working with them.
