The Ashland Tidings reported that the 1898 Fourth of July parade was the most memorable celebration in Southern Oregon. The spirit of patriotism inspired by American victories during the Spanish-American War influenced Ashlanders to build floats,

like the one in the photo, depicting the defeated Spanish warship, Alphonso Trece.
