Journal Reports Northern California Mining Activities

The July 15, 1903, edition of the mining journal, Mineral Wealth of Northern California, was full of news, including that Southern Oregon placer mines were expected to top $1 million in gold for the season.
Other news included the following:
-- The Old Channel mines on Galice Creek had sent 10 big gold bricks to company headquarters in Chicago, and “they are but half done cleaning the yellow metal from the sluices.”
-- Capt. Burns and Charles Ladd were installing a five-stamp mill at Mule Mine along the Rogue. A 200-foot tunnel, with a 100-foot shaft had revealed ore valued as high as $100 per ton.
-- The Greenback Mine, on Grave Creek, had put in 10 more ore-crushing stamps, bringing the total to 40. The property was considered one of the best mines in Oregon.
-- The Bannock Gold Dredging Company of Montana had contracted with a number of placer claims on Foots Creek and would install a dredge over the summer. Despite poor results elsewhere in Oregon, the journal said, “the company has thoroughly prospected the gravel of Foots Creek and feel(s) confident of making a success of its undertaking.”
