Michael Hanley purchased 636 acrs near Jacksonville in 1857, he built a farm and a 2 story house on the land in 1875. He invested in a sawmill (Duskin) near Prospect in the 1860's and later the Ashland Woolen Mill. Hanley is credited with the introduction of Alfalfa to the Rogue Valley. At his death in 1889 his property was divided equally among his children with Alice (daughter of the eldest son John) ending up with the family home.
