Commemorative Plate of the State Normal School, Ashland, OR
This may have been a personal keepsake for a student earning her teaching certification in the late 19th Century. Normal schools originated as institutions to train teachers. They are also called Teachers’ colleges and today, many colleges and universities offer training for kindergarten through twelfth grade. This school grew over the years and has become Southern Oregon University that hosts a Masters in Teaching Program in its School of Education.
