Chinese Drum

SOHS#2005.61.3
This large round Chinese drum has a skin covered head with metal tack accents. The body of the drum has a dark blue background with white Chinese mums painted on the sides. It is stamped Forever Peaceful Safe Co. with a street address in the city of Guangzhou also known as Canton. Chrysanthemums are considered one of the Four Gentelmen or Four Noble Ones; plum blossoms (winter), orchids (spring), bamboo (summer) and chrysanthemums (fall). These plants are depicted in imagery symbolizing the Chinese virtues of uprightness, purity, humility and perseverance against harsh conditions.
