Ivan Applegate was born in Missouri in 1840. When 3 years old he came to Oregon with his family in the Great Migration of 1843. He was commissioned a captain of a company of state militia in 1865. In 1868 he was appointed Special Commissary in charge of several Indian tribes at Yainax, Oregon. He fought in the Modoc Indian War and after the war retired from Indian service and went back to sheep ranching in Alkali Valley, Oregon. Eventually he retired to Ashland, Oregon, where he died 12/28/1918. SOURCE: SOHS Vertical file
