Crater Lake Lodge under construction. This detail shows the exterior fireplace suggested by Edward Henry Harriman, president of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was used only once, when a chimney fire resulted from the wooden formwork left by workman. The fireplace was covered when the annexes were built from 1922 to 1924. Note the difference between the stonework of the fireplace and the surroundings. The source for the early rockwork was Garfield Peak, but the fireplace suggests that stone from the Watchman was used. During rehabilitation from 1991 to 1995, the fireplace was turned around and is now fed by natural gas to illuminate the lobby interior.
